Newly Available for Warming: The Three Sisters Hut

We are very excited to announce the opening of the new Three Sisters Hut at Lyle’s Lookout in Royal Gorge, dedicated over Eliza’s birthday weekend with plastic cups of warm champagne and the cutting of a raggedy ribbon. This tiny hut incorporates new design and engineering - not that we don’t love rehabilitating the older huts! - and has exciting new features like wide benches, view maps, and a swing with a view. It will also give visitors a place to take a hiking break or warm up in the middle of a day of cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Eliza would have loved it.

Of course, the generous donors to the Eliza Memorial Fund made this possible. We couldn’t have done it, though, without the skilled and enthusiastic help of David Peartree of Peartree & Belli Architects; Abe Haan of Juniper Engineering; Gene Karnes and his crew Vinny and Francisco from Anchor Construction; John Svahn of the Truckee Donner Land Trust; Thomas Miner, the Royal Gorge Director; Karen Plank, who oversaw and delighted in the whole process from start to finish; and Sandy James, the project’s original cheerleader.

Cutting the ribbon to dedicate the new Three Sisters Hut!
